About This Program

African Watersports partners with The SharkWise Project to host scientific marine biology internships oriented around hands-on shark and reef research alongside professional biologists and conservationists.

Purpose Activities

A multi-week full immersion research internship assisting real research projects with professional biologists—covering shark genetics sampling, fin ID, photogrammetry, and biodiversity surveys. Interns become active field crew, learning how scientific research on sharks is conducted from data collection to analysis.

Ideal for students or anyone with strong interest in marine science; preference for those in or aiming for natural sciences or similar backgrounds.
Required: CV and motivation letter
Required: Basic diving experience (recommended)
Required: Interest in marine biology

This is a real research immersion. Direct scientific mentorship from PhDs and Masters students at Stellenbosch University. If you aren't fully qualified yet, you can still sign up for it - we'll help find the right training pathway for your current skills.

Additional Offerings

Fun Diving

Guided shark dives and reef dives at exclusive sites around Aliwal Shoal, including bull, tiger, and ragged-tooth shark encounters with veteran guides.

Training Courses

Diver training with experienced instructors from beginner to pro levels, including science-integrated dive experiences and advanced predator awareness.

Accommodation

All-inclusive packages include on-site or partner accommodation with meals, available with longer research or dive programs.
